INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE IN BRIEF

INTRODUCTION

Singida Municipality being a capital town of Singida Region comprises of the town proper and the peri - Urban areas. It is a hub with roads leading to Dodoma, Arusha, Kigoma and Mwanza Municipality.

LOCATION

Singida Municipality is located in the central plateau of Tanzania between 40 40’ and 40 53’ south of Equator and longitude 340 30’ and 340 53’ East of GMT.

Singida Municipal council covers an area of 754 square km. which is equivalent to 75,400 hectares with land use pattern as shown below;-

CLIMATE

The climate of Singida Municipality is characterized by long period of up to 8 months of dry season from May to November. Heavy intermittent rainfall occurs between December and April with typical tropical characteristics. The mean annual rainfall is 660 mm.

Temperature ranges from 150 C and 310 C with the highest temperature in September and October. Cool weather is experienced in the months of June to August with temperature reaching 150 C.

POPULATION

Population of Singida Municipal Council according to the 2002 National Population Census and projection made up to 2008 is 153,546 people of whom 75,748 are males and 77,798 are Females. Average population growth rate in the urban is 4.9 higher than that of the peri- Urban which is 2.5% hence the average family size is between 4 and 6 person in a house hold and life expectancy is set at 52 years.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS

Major economic activities performed by Singida Municipal residents are livestock keeping, agriculture and horticulture production, trading and commencing, employment in public and small scale industries especially in agro-business and furniture makings.

The per capital income of Singida Municipal Council is Tshs. 350,294

AGRICULTURE

According to 2002 National Population Census, about 21% of the Council residents are engaged in agriculture and livestock keeping and the remaining population is engaged in business and office work.

Agriculture activities are carried out mainly in 7 peri- Urban wards of the Council. Farm sizes are 0.5-5.0 acres. Bulrush millet sorghum cassava and sweat potatoes are the main food crops, sunflower is the only cash crop. Other income generating activities include sale of livestock products (meat, milk, skin and hides and poultry. The average yield for millet is about 600 kg per acre while sorghum is 600 kg per acre. Generally, unreliable climatic conditions limit agriculture production in areas exacerbated by low usage of agricultural inputs like fertilizer, pesticides and modern equipments.

LIVESTOCK

Type of livestock found in Singida Municipal Council includes; cattle, goats, sheep donkeys and chickens. According to livestock census conducted in 2002 indicate that there were 172,475 livestock unit out of which 53,450 are cattle, goats 34,479, sheep 9,240, donkeys 522 and 74,788 are chickens. Livestock production for cattle, goats, sheep and chicken is hampered by poor facilities especially dips which out 10 only 5 are in good working condition.

NATURAL RESOURCES

Natural resources productions in Singida Municipal Council include fishing and extraction of building minerals. Quantification of production in these areas is not available due to the fact that most of the production sales are not controlled by the Council.

INDUSTRIES

Singida town is not an industrial town though there are two agro –processing industries producing 80,000 liters and 16 small scale oil processing industries producing about 40,000 liters of sun flowers oil per day respectively. They also produce seed cakes for animal consumption. The sector is the sole producer of cooking oil which is of prime value as is cholesterol free. The factories provide employment opportunities to about 40% of formal employment sectors which women are majority.

INSTITUTION

In Singida Municipality there are 46 Primary Schools, 19 Secondary Schools, 1 Laboratory Assistant School, 1 Singida School of Accountancy, 1 National Vocational Training centre, 1 Folk Development College, 1 Singida Teachers Training Centre, Regional Hospital, 1 Health Center and 14 Dispensaries.
